Survive: Escape From Atlantis!

Confusion: Espionage and Deception in the Cold War Dies ist das unbekannteste unserer ersten Spiele.

Jeder dachte, James J St. Laurent wäre gestorben.

Nesbitt, who was one of the founders of Valley Games.

Kevin and I knew each other from conversations online while he was at Valley and I was a customer of theirs. During mid/late 2009, we began to discuss the potential for establishing a new game publishing company. Kevin and I are very different people, but very often great collaborations are found when people are very different, as they bring varying ideas to the table.

Kevin lives in Ontario, Canada, and I live in New Jersey, USA, which makes Stronghold Games a truly North American board game publisher. We met for the first time in person in Atlantic City, NJ in October 2009… and decided that the fit was right! Stronghold Games was formed shortly after that meeting.

We quickly established the mission statement for Stronghold Games:

“Stronghold Games publishes only the highest-quality, finest board games in the hobby game industry”. That’s easy enough to say, of course! However, we live and breathe this statement each day when we discuss our projects. No corners are ever cut in the production of our games. We ensure that gamers are getting the maximum value out of the products of Stronghold Games. And by saying the “finest games”, we are stating that our games will always be games which are the “best” in whatever they are bringing to the table, be it the best in a given mechanic, the best in theme, the most unique in production characteristics, etc. Our products are a “Best in Breed” among games.

We want people to look to Stronghold Games as a company that they will trust with their hard-earned board game money when they are ready to find new, interesting games. While we are new, and small at the moment, we will not be soon. Stronghold Games will be a force in the board game industry in the future, and we invite all gamers to follow us as we proceed on this adventure!

2) Please tell us about your games!

Stronghold Games has 3 games that are now in stores or will be in the near future:
Code 777 This was our first production, and it was a great game with which to start the company! Code 777 is the granddaddy of all deduction games, in the same manner that El Grande is the granddaddy of all area control games. It’s a 25 year old game that stands the test of time perfectly!

Code 777 is a pure deduction game, where each player has 3 numbers on a rack in front of them. However, they cannot see the numbers on their own rack, but they can see the numbers on each other player’s rack. In turn, a player reads the top question from the Question Card deck, and answers the question based on the numbers (and the colors of the numbers) that he or she can see on the other players’ racks. The questions have to do with the numbers and the colors, like “Do you see more red numbers or more black numbers?”. The correct answer, however, is only your “code” (the 3 numbers on your rack, not the colors of the numbers). Each time a question is asked and answered, each other player gets a little more information about the 3 numbers on his or her rack. At any time, a player may guess the numbers on their own rack, and if right, that player scores one point. It takes 3 points to win a game. If they are wrong, they get new numbers and they start again, and this of course gives all the other players more information – all the players get to see the new numbers that the incorrect guesser just drew onto their rack! It is a fiendish game, very simple to explain, very difficult to play well!

Stronghold Games made 2 major upgrades to the game over the previous printings:
– The game now supports 2 to 5 players (where before it was only 2 to 4 players).
– The game components are color-blind friendly! Now, anyone can play the game regardless of whether they have a color sensitivity or not.

Survive: Escape From Atlantis!

Our second game, which we released in Europe at the Essen Spiel in October 2010, is a reprint of the classic game “Survive!”. It was called “Escape From Atlantis!” in Europe. Since this game had a legacy between the North American and European versions, we added some additional components to the game, so players can have the exact experience of the original Survive! game, or they can add in the additional components and use optional “Challenge Rules” to customize the experience, making the game play in a manner similar to the “Escape From Atlantis!” version.

In Survive: Escape From Atlantis!, players must move their people tokens off of the island of Atlantis, which is a series of hexes that are “sinking” in the center of the board, to the outer islands in the corners. People can get there by swimming (which is very slow) or via boat (if they can find and get into one). In either case, their journey will be very perilous! They must avoid Sharks, Whales, and Sea Serpents on the way, each of which will attack the poor Atlanteans in different ways. For instance, Sharks only attach swimmers, Whales only attack manned boats, and Sea Serpents attack manned boats and swimmers. With the optional Challenge Rules, you can add in the Dolphins to help the swimmers, but then you will also add in the “Dive Dice”, which are more brutal than the regular “Creature Die”. The player that has saved the highest amount of “People Points” at the end of the game wins!

Stronghold Games made some great improvements over the original Survive!. The original version had tiny 1mm thick cardboard hex tiles for Atlantis, and 1mm thick cardboard boats. Our version has 2mm thick Beach tiles, 4mm thick Forest tiles, and 6mm thick Mountain tiles, giving the board a fabulous 3-D look! This is the first time that anyone has ever punched 6mm cardboard in the board game industry! We also used slotted wooden boats, so that the people tokens fit right into the boats. All the sea creatures are beautifully cut wood as well. This is a great high-quality production that will be loved by both gamers for its light fun strategy elements, as well as by families.

We also created a mini-expansion, “The Giant Squid”, which contains Giant Squid sea creatures and the rules to add them into the game.

Confusion: Espionage and Deception in the Cold War

This is the least well known of our first set of games. However, those who do know of the original game, “Confusion”, speak about it and the Designer in glowing terms. Considered to be Robert Abbott’s masterpiece achievement, the game was never released in North American, and was released about 20 years ago only in a limited manner in Germany. Stronghold Games saw the potential of this great design and has brought this back, themed with the darkness of the Cold War area.

Confusion: Espionage and Deception in the Cold War is a 2-player game with a very unique mechanic. In this game, you are tasked with moving your Spies to capture the Top Secret Briefcase and deliver it to the opponent’s side of the board. However, in the beginning of the game, you don’t know how to move your own Spies! Thematically, consider them mercenaries or deep undercover agents that can’t be contacted easily, so you can’t get them to move consistently in the manner you want. By carefully attempting Spy moves, you get more and more information about how each Spy moves, until you can reliably manipulate that Spy and start to close in on your objective. The information that is discovered about how your Spies move (and what your opponent knows about how his Spies move) is recording in each player’s Spy Notebook, which is a dry-erase board where each player takes his secret notes. But be careful, as there is a Double Agent amongst your trusted Spies! If the Double Agent gets the Top Secret Briefcase, they may deliver it right into your opponent’s hands!

Stronghold Games has really raised the bar with the production quality of this game. We used high-density plastics, similar to Mahjong tiles, in the creation of the 2-piece design for each Spy. There is a main piece and a movement piece, and at the start of the game, you randomize the movement pieces, so that the magnificently etched Spy pieces will move differently each game. This game will be a true beauty to display in your home or gaming area.

3) What have you planned for the future?

Our 2011 catalog will include several other reprints, as well as new game designs. The reprints that we have lined up include the long-sought after game “Outpost” and the even rarer game “Crude: The Oil Game” (which in Europe was published without permission of the original designer as “McMulti”).

Outpost is a game of building the best space Outpost, via bidding in auctions for the parts to the Outpost that you need. However, the parts and resources are very limited, so bidding gets very contentious if players are trying to employ similar strategies. The player that builds the best Outpost will be the winner. When this great game was originally published, the one strike against it was the very thin components. Of course, Stronghold Games will be vastly upgrading the components to Outpost, as is the hallmark of all of our games.

With “Crude: The Oil Game”, Stronghold Games will be releasing this in a manner similar to how McMulti was released, that is with all of the great bits in that European edition. There will be plastic Oil Wells, Drilling Rigs, Refineries, Crude barrels, Gasoline barrels, and Gas pumps, all of which will be played on an oversized board. We are working with the original designer, James J. St. Laurent, who is very excited about bringing his game back into print with some updates on the economics, particularly after his game was reprinted without his permission previously.

4) I’ve read that you are plannung to republish Crude – How did you find the author? I heard that this what quite a task (Hexagames didnt find him, but that was pre-internet though)

Everyone thought that James J. St. Laurent had passed away. Well, I can tell you that the rumors of his demise were greatly exaggerated! J

Without going into details, Stronghold Games has become quite the Detective Agency! When we found Mr. St. Laurent, he was very happy to hear from us, and he knew about the unauthorized publication of his game in Europe by Hexagames. He was very happy to work with us on a new production of his game, one that he not only authorizes, but where he will be an integral part of bringing the game back, including making some small changes and adding some additional rules… maybe even an included expansion to the game in the new edition? It’s too early to say right now, but we are very excited to be working directly with Jim on this great game reprint.

Stronghold Games is about to conduct an interview with James J. St. Laurent. We’ll be posting the interview on our website once we are complete, which will be in late November. If you’d like to be informed when we have done the interview, please sign-up for our mailing list, and you’ll be the first to read the great story about this man and his game!

You can sign-up for our mailing list on our website, which is:

www.stronghold-games.com

Click on the CONTACT US link and send us a message to signup. You’ll receive our monthly newsletter as well as any special game announcements that occur.
